Educational Background:
Steven earned his B.A., Phi Beta Kappa, in Political Science with a minor in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of California, Berkeley with highest honors and highest distinction, a Master of Public Policy and Management (M.P.P.M.), Phi Kappa Phi, from the University of Southern California, and a Master of Advanced Study (M.A.S.) in Criminology, Law and Society from the University of California, Irvine, where he gained membership in Alpha Phi Sigma. As a Clarendon Scholar, and a recipient of the Overseas Research Student Award and Wolfson College Graduate Scholarship, Steven is presently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Socio-Legal Studies.
Professional Background:
In the United States, Steven worked full-time for over two years as a Redevelopment Project Manager for the Lake Elsinore Redevelopment Agency, taught introductory political science part-time as an associate faculty member at Mt. San Jacinto College, interned as an investigative assistant for the Berkeley Police Review Commission through the Cal in Berkeley program, volunteered as a scholar intern at the California Senate Office of Research through the UC Center in Sacramento, and worked part-time as a student worker at the U.S. Department of Justice's U.S. Attorney's Office, among many other valuable work experiences that developed his interest in law and government.
Extracurricular Activities:
In addition to his formal academic studies, Steven recently completed a poster presentation at the 2010 biannual Surveillance and Society/Surveillance Studies Network conference, ‘A Global Surveillance Society?’, at City University London, and is presently working with colleagues in the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies to develop an annual working paper series for the support, publication, and promotion of scholarly writing regarding law and society. Steven was also recently elected to serve as a student representative on the Governing Body of Wolfson College (2010-2011) and an Oxford University Student Union representative on the Rules Committee of the University of Oxford (2010-2011). He is a lifetime member of the Oxford Union Society and a volunteer with his wife in the various activities of the Family Society at Wolfson College. Steven presently resides at Wolfson College with his wife and four children.
Research Interests:
Steven’s current research focuses on the intersection of rights and regulation in the field of surveillance. Specifically, the principal empirical research question emanating from his study considers the role of privacy rights in the formation, implementation, and enforcement of surveillance regulations in England. His thesis contributes to the debate over whether rights and regulations complement or conflict with one another in law and society. Generally, he is interested in empirical legal studies, human rights, constitutional law, administrative law, conflict resolution, criminology, criminal justice, public policy, and the theories and practices of regulation and governance.
