Varvara has a joint degree in common and civil law from the University of Louisiana Law Centre. Her previous areas of interest include international trafficking in women and children, development of Russian oil and gas law, arbitration clauses in product sharing agreements, and Russian funding policy for science and innovation. Varvara’s MPhil degree in Russian and East European Studies at the University of Oxford was based on examination of perceptions and attitudes towards law in the Russian Federation after its transition to democracy. Varvara is currently reading for a DPhil degree in Socio-Legal Studies. Her research project investigates perceptions of legality among ordinary citizens in Russia and the United Kingdom in courts of justices of the peace, magistrates’ and county courts. Varvara’s main interest is examination of factors responsible for strength and weakness of the images of law and courts held by ordinary people in different legal traditions and political regimes.
