Ursula Cheer (May 2011)

Professor Ursula Cheer joined us from the University of Canterbury, where she is an Associate Professor of Law. She obtained an LLB (Hons). degree from Canterbury in 1982, followed by a Master of Laws by exam and thesis on Civil Liberties and Censorship from Cambridge University, United Kingdom, in 1990. After working as a Grade 7 Lawyer in the United Kingdom Law Commission for four years, Ursula joined the School of Law at Canterbury in 1995, teaching Torts, Contract, Bill of Rights and Civil Liberties, the latter being eventually replaced with Media Law. Professor Cheer's research interests lie in a combination of Torts, such as Defamation, Civil Liberties, in particular, Censorship, and the broad range of topics making up Media Law, such as Privacy, and regulatory systems such as the Broadcasting Standards Authority and the Press Council.
