Visitors Programme
***Due to oversubscription we can only accept applications for January 2013 onwards***
Visiting Academics
The Visitors' Programme is an important part of the Centre's activities. We welcome applications from academics and practitioners who wish both to contribute to and participate in the research programmes underway at the Centre. It may be possible to nominate a Visitor as a temporary Visiting Scholar of Wolfson College (Wolfson is a postgraduate college of the University of Oxford) , depending on seniority and the availability of space. We encourage our Visitors to participate fully in the intellectual and social life of both the Centre and the University. Visitors are entitled to make full use of the University's research facilities and libraries, in addition to attending seminars, lectures and other academic gatherings ordinarily closed to the general public. Moreover, we encourage our Visitors to make contact with others in their field, both in Oxford and in the wider academic community.
The Centre considers the Visitors' Programme to be of great importance, and makes considerable efforts to integrate Visitors into its day-to-day activities. In return, we ask our Visitors to involve themselves in those activities, in particular:
- to have a clear research project to pursue while at the Centre
- to participate in seminars and workshops at the Centre and give presentations to them where appropriate
- to contribute to the Centre's publication record
We expect our Visitors to be fully proficient in the use of written and spoken English at an academic level so that they will be able to derive full benefit from the Programme.
Applications are normally made during the academic year preceding a proposed visit, but must be at least one full term in advance. An application should include the following materials:
- A completed application form, which can be downloaded here
- A research proposal
- A detailed curriculum vitae
Once all the above have been received, your application will then be reviewed. You will then be contacted as to whether your application has been successful. References will be requested upon acceptance to the programme- please do not send these as part of your application.
Please note that if we do not have space available in the Centre, we will be unable to accept your application.
Finance
Because of the financial stringency within the University, we ask our visitors to make a contribution towards the running costs of the Centre. The Centre charges £400 per month to cover the cost of the Visitors' Programme; this charge entitles the visitor to the use of a shared office (2 people). Should the office be fully occupied at the time of your proposed visit, the Centre may be able to offer visitors use of a desk in one of our open plan areas at a reduced rate. If this is the case, further details will be provided upon application. Our experience is that visitors are usually able to include these costs in their own research funding.
Visiting Students
The Centre also welcomes applications from graduate students who would like to spend time at the Centre in order to progress their research, gain experience by working with one of our Fellows, meet other staff and students, and benefit from taking part in Centre and Faculty seminars. We expect a visiting student to have a well-developed research project in the broad field of socio-legal studies; to provide a clear statement how her or his work at the Centre would benefit that project; and to assist one of the Fellows on a part-time basis.
An applicant should provide the material that we require for a Visiting Academic Programme and send it to Dr. Marina Kurkchiyan (e-mail: marina.kurkchiyan@csls.ox.ac.uk) who will assess suitability. Please note that applicants do not need to identify which Fellow they would like to work with while at the Centre- Dr. Kurkchiyan will appoint a Fellow whose research corresponds the closest to the applicant's area of interest. Alternatively, an applicant is welcome to contact Dr. Kurkchiyan to discuss their proposal and ask any questions they may have.
In assessing suitability we will take into consideration the merit of the application as well as the availability of resources at CSLS at the time.
Finance
Visiting students are charged for the use of the fax machine, telephone, printer/photocopier and any postage costs.
Staying in Oxford
Oxford, like many small academic communities, has a limited availability of accommodation, particularly for short term visitors. Therefore, living arrangement should be made well in advance through the city's letting agencies. As a rough guide, the cost of living for one adult is £7,500 per annum, and rent for a one bedroom house around £800-£900 per calendar month. For further details please see the University of Oxford’s accommodation website. Please also note that you are also responsible for funding your own travel and subsistence.
Duration
The Visitors Programme is extremely popular, and as such is heavily oversubscribed. In order to cope with demand, we ask that your proposed visit dates do not exceed a period of six months; you are welcome to request an extension to your stay once you are at the Centre, but this cannot always be granted.
